The Check Dam Construction Project at the Huai Sai Royal Development Study Centre in Phetchaburi

Decades ago, the area of the Huai Sai Royal Development Study Centre in Phetchaburi had been severely deforested by local residents though poor farming practices, particularly for pineapple plantations, the misuse of agro-chemicals, and burning crop residues that badly damaged soil quality. As a result, the soil became sandy, hard, and nutrient-poor, nearly impossible to grow any plants. In light of this, on 5 April 2013, His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej (King Rama IX) graciously initiated a project that transformed the land into the environmental development study center through reforestation and water resource management, while enhancing the quality of life for local communities surrounding the Huai Sai Royal Development Study Centre.

In 2014, Krungsri, in collaboration with Siam City Cement Public Company Limited, started the ‘Check Dam Construction Project at the Huai Sai Royal Development Study Centre in Phetchaburi’ for environmental conservation and reforestation in the project site and surrounding areas in alignment with the late king’s initiative. Under the project, volunteers of both organizations, ‘Krungsri Volunteers’ and ‘INSEE Asa Volunteers’, participated in the semi-permanent check dam construction activity at the Huai Sai Royal Development Study Centre in Phetchaburi, with an aim to conserve soil moisture and reduce the speed of the water stream in honor of the King Rama IX on occasion of his 84th anniversary. (Target: 84 check dams) These check dams would also become water resources for community farming.

Aligning with Krungsri’s practices of environmental development for sustainability, the Check Dam Construction Project at the Huai Sai Royal Development Study Centre also helps instill the habits of natural resource and environmental conservation in Krungsri employees through conservation and rehabilitation activities related to water sources, including mountains, forests, wetlands, etc. These activities not only help us achieve above-stated objectives, but are also well aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), namely SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, SDG 15: Life on Land, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals.
